Russell’s Reserve Released Its Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson E Bourbon

Wild Turkey has had a lot going on over the past few months. Last June saw the launch of the latest edition of Russell’s Reserve 13, which at 123.8 proof was the strongest to date at the time. Then just a few weeks ago the final release in the Master’s Keep series just arrive, Beacon, which was one of the best bourbons we’ve tasted all year. And now comes the news of the latest expression in the Russell’s Single Rickhouse lineup, and at 128 proof this bourbon ranks as the highest-ABV whiskey ever bottled by the Wild Turkey distillery—and it’s a good one to boot.

Russell’s, the smaller batch lineup from Wild Turkey that’s shepherded by master distiller Eddie Russell, released its first Single Rickhouse expression back in 2022. That bourbon, like all subsequent releases, was aged at Camp Nelson, a warehouse site located a few minutes from the distillery that is legendary (among whiskey nerds, at least) for the quality of the bourbon that comes from there. Each release, however, was aged in a different warehouse in an attempt to showcase a sense of terroir that comes from the particular climate and environment in which the barrels are stored.

This year’s release was aged in Camp Nelson E, a warehouse built in 1946 that sits on the edge of the property along the Kentucky River, which the brand says subjects it to more shade and different wind patterns than other rickhouses, and it has a dirt basement floor creating a much cooler microclimate. This is supposed to make it very different from last year’s Camp Nelson B release, a rickhouse that is exposed to a lot of sunlight. “Camp Nelson E is one of the most interesting aging environments we have, completely different from where we’ve pulled from in the past,” said Russell in a statement. “The barrels from the fifth floor have this beautiful balance of dark fruit, baking spice, and rich oak that felt true to Russell’s Reserve, but also completely its own. That’s exactly what this series is about—celebrating the uniqueness of each rickhouse and how it helps shape the whiskey we love.”

The barrels for Camp Nelson E were pulled from the fifth floor of this seven-story rickhouse, and as mentioned before the whiskey was bottled at 128 proof. That’s pretty high, particularly for Wild Turkey—even its barrel-proof Rare Breed comes in more than 10 degrees lower. Still, the whiskey is utterly drinkable—there are notes of vanilla, caramel, maple, and oak, followed by some baking spices (cardmom, and cinnamon stand out), along with licorice, menthol, tobacco, and some toasted almonds. That proof is a bit high, so make no mistake—there is some heat on the finish—but add a splash of water or pour over a large cube to cool it down if you like, and this new bourbon will not fail to impress.

Russell’s Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson E is available now at liquor stores around the country, although based on what past releases are going for you might have to spend more than its suggested price of $300. You can also find some of the previous Single Rickhouse bottles, along with other expressions, available to purchase at ReserveBar now.
