Last Friday was Repeal Day, marking 91 years since the end of Prohibition and the close of a dark time in American drinking history (except, of course, if you enjoyed going to wild speakeasies and having a blast drinking illicit liquor at extravagant flapper parties). To pay tribute to the Noble Experiment, Old Forester just released the latest expression in its 117 Series called Prohibition Era Still Proof, a high-proof bourbon that is rooted in history.
Old Forester is a Kentucky distillery owned by Brown-Forman that has a small distillery and consumer experience on Whiskey Row in Louisville, but produces the majority of its whiskey at the much larger Shively distillery. During Prohibition, Old Forester was one of a handful of distilleries that was granted a medicinal license to continue selling whiskey (technically, the license was given to Brown-Forman), and over the last few years it allowed you to distill whiskey for short periods of time. Yes, whiskey was considered to have some medicinal properties a century ago, something that has been pretty much completely disproven despite a few alcohol brands still trying to market themselves as being “clean” or “better for you.” Others that were given this license include Frankfort (now known as Four Roses), Glenmore (which became part of Diageo), and Schenley (also part of Diageo).
Prohibition Era Still Proof is a Kentucky straight bourbon that is bottled at 130 proof. That high number that is a tribute to the proof at which Old Forester was distilled during the 100-day “distiller’s holiday” as Prohibition drew to a close, the short time period when the distillery was allowed to actually make whiskey and replenish its diminishing stocks. “This release is a tribute to the ingenuity that allowed Old Forester to endure and emerge stronger during one of the most challenging periods for American whiskey,” said Caleb Trigo, assistant master distiller, in a statement. “This bourbon offers a glimpse into the intensity and authenticity of our Prohibition heritage.”
We did not get a sample of this new whiskey yet, but it’s pretty strong so expect a healthy hit of heat on the palate among whatever other flavors you might encounter, like brown sugar, vanilla, maple, and oak. As mentioned before, Prohibition Era Still Proof is part of the 117 Series, which has included past releases like High Angels Share, Rum Finish, and 1910 Extra Old. It’s available now at the Old Forester website and from select Kentucky retailers (SRP $65), although it’ll likely show up on the secondary market soon for inflated prices.
