The Formula 1 movie, called F1 or F1 the Movie depending on the context and marketing, was an enormous success last year and nearly every driver in last year’s grid made an appearance, including seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Now, it appears Hamilton is coming back for the sequel, probably not called F1 2.
Hamilton was a producer on the first F1 movie and is heavily involved in the second as well, currently working with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski on a story. The star driver also seems aware that, for movies, the second time around is not usually as good as the first one, but he’s determined for that not to happen with F1.
“Sequels often aren’t always great,” Hamilton said, according to Road & Track. “We’ve got a great team, got a great cast, great writer, so I’m not concerned about that—but we’re going to take our time and make sure we get it just the way it needs to be.”

The first movie, spoiler alert, ended with Brad Pitt’s character Sonny Hayes taking home his first Formula 1 victory—and possibly his last, as the movie ends with Sonny back at the Baja 1000, as he was seen at the beginning of the film. A racer’s racer, Sonny is seemingly too old to be driving Formula 1 cars anymore, but not too old to keep racing in a series with dimmer lights, probably until he can race no more.
The story of the sequel will likely increase the focus on Damson Idris‘s character Joshua Pearce and also introduce some new faces as well, since, in real life, F1 drivers are constantly being hired and fired.
“We are already working on the first script. We had our first meeting maybe mid-to-late second part of the end of the year—me, Jerry, and Joe—talking about different ideas, different directions that we could go with the script. And then with [screenwriter Ehren Kruger], we’ve had plenty of meetings on it. It’s really exciting. I’m super-excited,” Hamilton said. “Now I’m used to it, so I know what to expect, I know what we could do better.”
