Few cooperative apartment houses in New York are as distinguished—or as tightly controlled by an exacting board—as the stately limestone building at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 66th Street. Residences in the 12-story, white-glove building rarely change hands, making the availability of one of its 16 elegantly proportioned units, which has ties to the late Wall Street legend and former Bear Stearns chairman Alan “Ace” Greenberg (1927–2014), all the more notable. 

Serhant listing agent Emanuele Fiore confirms the spacious residence on the second floor of the James E.R. Carpenter–designed building at 845 Fifth Avenue was last purchased in the late 1960s. Records also show that in 2005, Greenberg and his wife, Kathryn, paid $600,000 in cash for a small ground-floor unit using the address of the second-floor apartment. While the property appears to remain within the Greenberg family, current ownership has not been publicly confirmed.

In addition to its five ample bedrooms, the 7,500-square-foot home includes seven full bathrooms. Its main attractions, however, are two Central Park-facing living rooms with their own distinct qualities. Elegant wallpaper spans one of the generous spaces, alongside original crown moldings and classic light fixtures. The other doubles as a billiards and bar salon with custom wood paneling and parquet flooring. Marble fireplace mantles sit at the heart of each.

Other highlights include a private elevator, a south-facing gallery, a massive dining room with carved plaster ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace, plus a service wing that includes a pantry, laundry room, gym, and four staff rooms. A library with access to a discreet powder room is another of the residence’s key features, apart from its primary suite, where dual dressing rooms and marble-finished bathrooms are found. The ground-level studio apartment, which serves as a deluxe guest suite, has its own kitchen, full bathroom, and washer/dryer unit.

Records show current owners in the building, which is also known as 4 East 66th Street, include financiers Christopher Flowers, Charles Coleman III, and Danial Nir. Billionaire philanthropist Julia Koch bought late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s longtime home for $101 millionin 2022, and the most recent transfer was earlier this year when socialite Shafi Roepers sold her third-floor unit for $28 million to an unknown buyer.
