Almost five years ago, Gary Ross doled out $5.4 million for a red brick brownstone in Brooklyn’s historic Cobble Hill neighborhood that was built in the late 1850s for merchant Samuel Richard St. John. The Hollywood writer, producer, and director—best known for his work on the hit films Seabiscuit, Big, and The Hunger Games—and his wife, Claudia Solti, subsequently undertook an extensive renovation, which included landscaping the private garden and adding a wellness and entertainment space.
“We wanted a house built around how we actually live: dinner parties, films with friends, kids in the garden,” said Ross. “There is a proper dining room connected to a full kitchen by a dumbwaiter, and beneath all of that, a real theater with 10-foot ceilings, next to a spa. We went a little nuts, but we’re so happy with how it turned out. We feel like the place transports you.”

The couple, who have relocated to Los Angeles, are now putting their reimagined digs up for sale at $10.6 million. Carl Gambino and Marta Maletz of the Gambino Group at Compass share the listing.
Standing out in the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom spread, which clocks in at 23 feet wide and roughly 6,400 square feet across six levels, is a parlor-floor living room sporting herringbone-patterned wood floors, a linear fireplace, and windows stretching to the apex of the 12-foot ceiling. Steel-framed glass doors lead to a formal dining room, which has a modern dumbwaiter that lowers to a garden-floor kitchen featuring custom cabinetry, an eat-in island, premium appliances, and a walk-in pantry. An adjoining lounge area spills out to a terrace with a fire pit and the lush garden beyond.

Three bedrooms on the first and third levels each have their own bathrooms and walk-in closets, while a primary suite occupying the entire fourth floor comes with two walk-in closets, a bath with dual vanities and a white veined-marble shower, and a separate fireside den. Finishing touches include a top level with a sky-lit living room, a brick-accented kitchen, and a study overlooking an enclosed terrace, plus a basement holding a gym, a sauna, and a soundproof movie theater with plush tiered seating.
Set in northwest Brooklyn, on the border of Brooklyn Heights and just minutes from the waterfront, the home is also easily accessible to shops and restaurants along Court and Smith streets, as well as the Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Bridge parks.
