A Dutch tuner just unveiled a new Land Rover Defender custom build that turns the SUV into a pickup, enhancing some practicality while diminishing it in equal measure. At the very least, it looks interesting.
The Heritage Customs Valiance Pick-Up is a “semi coachbuilt project,” meaning that it’s based on an existing car but with some heavy modifications—most obviously, the bed in the rear. Elsewhere, the company will paint the car a color of your choosing, in consultation with their experts. The interior is up for grabs, too, with options including Alcantara and leather, as well as the wheels.
“You can select yours and make your pickup look good,” Heritage Customs says on its website. “Our designers have made various unique accessories to give your Defender a better impression. Our style is distinguished and classy to make you feel king of the road.”
Under the hood is a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 making 419 horsepower, according to Top Gear. One thing missing, of course, given that there is a cargo bed there instead, is the spare wheel, which is affixed to the rear on a stock Land Rover Defender 130. It will be up to less impartial observers to determine whether this makes the Heritage Customs Valiance Pick-Up look less hardcore than the car it’s based on. (A note on the name: Heritage calls the new build the “Valiance Pickup” on its website, and the “Valiance Pick-Up” on its social media channels, while some outlets are going with “Valiance pickup.” It is, nevertheless, a pickup truck named Valiance.)

Heritage Customs
Heritage Customs does not quote a price, but Top Gear thinks it’ll be around €155,000, or around $178,000, not including taxes. That price includes a donor Land Rover Defender 130, which starts at $73,000 in the U.S.
On balance, that’s a fair amount to pay for a modified Land Rover, or not, depending on your perspective. You will have the most unique car within miles, though. If you’re interested, you can put down a €10,000 deposit on Heritage Customs’ website. Delivery of the first Valiance Pick-Up is planned for February.
