Genesis Just Unveiled an Outrageous Off-Road Supercar Concept

Genesis continues to raise the bar for concept car design.

The Korean luxury marque just unveiled what is arguably its outrageous prototype yet, the X Skorpio. The vehicle is a stretched-out, off-road-ready supercar that’s better suited for conquering sand dunes than setting lap records.

The concept was unveiled during a special event in the Rub’ al Khali, or “Empty Quarter,” desert. It was an appropriate spot for the reveal because, despite being a supercar, the X Skorpio was heavily inspired by the type of desert racers that compete in the Dakar Rally, a competition the area has played host to in recent years.

This inspiration has resulted in a concept so bold that it makes last year’s X Gran Equator look pedestrian. It’s a high-riding fastback with exaggerated proportions, a sculpted body kit, and gigantic fenders. Adding to its delightfully cartoonish profile is a set of giant, 40-inch knobby all-terrain tires.

The exterior may look ridiculous, but the two-seat cabin features all the sophisticated luxe touches we’ve come to expect from Genesis, including quilted leather and what we can only imagine is a hearty climate control system. It also features several competition-inspired details, like a steering wheel with an integrated digital gauge cluster and a sliding navigation screen that can be used by the driver or passenger.

Mechanical details are currently scarce, in true concept fashion. Genesis dis say that the vehicle is powered by a “high-performance” V-8. The mill is said to make 1,100 hp and 850 ft lbs of torque. That suggests that the prototype will have no trouble speeding off through the desert, though some of that power may be wasted on paved roads.

We know what you’re probably thinking: if only Genesis had the guts to put the X Skorpio into production. Well, it does—sort of. The company’s chief creative officer, Luc Donckerwolke, told Car & Driver that the response to the concept has been so strong that there will be a very limited production run of the vehicle “for people in this area who need toys.” Unfortunately, for now, there appear to be no plans to offer the spectacular off-roader outside the Middle East at this time.
