Ford’s New Supercharger Kit Gives the F-150 Lobo Even More the Power

Muscle trucks are a long and proud tradition for American automakers, who frequently compete to make the most nonsensical vehicles possible, like a 700-horsepower Ford F-150. Ford now has a new kit to make your F-150 produce 700 horsepower, too.

The company’s new Supercharger Kit can be equipped on all F-150s that have the 5.0-liter V-8 engine. That powerplant normally makes 400 horsepower and 410 ft lbs of torque, but with the Whipple supercharger attached, those numbers get a big boost to 700 horsepower and 590 ft lbs of torque. A Whipple supercharger on the Mustang GT got even more power out of the engine, or 810 horsepower and 615 ft lbs.

Ford says its F-150 Lobo, which sits a little lower than other F-150s, is the “ideal vehicle” for the upgrade, and that’s probably true, since the model calls itself a “street truck”—as in a truck you possibly could zoom fast in—but without any extra power. The Supercharger Kit solves that problem.

“Engineered to Ford’s rigorous 100,000-mile durability standards, the kit ensures massive capability without sacrificing reliability. It is the ultimate expression of the Ford philosophy,” Matt Monroe, a Ford Custom Garage manager, said in a statement. “By offering factory-backed, warranty-friendly performance upgrades from day one, Ford gives customers the power and peace of mind to take an already incredible vehicle and truly make it their own.”

The advantage of buying a supercharger from Ford instead of an aftermarket supplier is also apparent in the warranty. The Supercharger Kit has a warranty for three years or 36,000 miles, which will be useful for any buyer planning to use the new set-up to its fullest abilities. The V-8 F-150’s top speed of around 100 mph is not altered by the kit, though. The supercharger is all about acceleration, in other words, and with 700 horsepower you can go pretty quick even in a vehicle that weighs over two tons.

The Supercharger Kit costs an extra $10,250, which is a fair chunk of change for a truck that already starts around $60,000. Or that is a small price to pay for all the extra power you are getting, and the ability to tell your friends about it. Ford certainly thinks so.
