Estelle Getty’s Former L.A. House Lists for $7.7 Million

Almost 18 years after Estelle Getty (born Estelle Gettleman) died at age 84, the Hollywood legend’s home in the lower Bird Streets neighborhood of Hollywood Hills, just north of Sunset Boulevard, has surfaced for sale, asking a dash under $7.7 million.

The veteran TV actress and comedian—probably best known for her iconic Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning turn as sharp-tongued Sophia Petrillo on the hit TV sitcom The Golden Girls—owned the property for close to seven years after purchasing it through a trust in 1994. She sold the place in 2001 for around $1.5 million to its current owners, who have since made several updates. Aileen Comora and Paul Lester of The Agency hold the listing.

Originally built in 1948, the residence offers five bedrooms and an equal number of bathrooms in roughly 4,500 square feet across a main level and a basement with direct access to a two-car garage. Elegant interiors boast dark hardwood floors, as well as French doors and windows and decorative crown molding and wainscoting.

Tucked away behind tall hedges and a gated entrance on nearly half an acre, the creamy stucco and white wood-sided structure piques interest from the outset with a large bay window and an iron-railed front porch. An ebony-hued front door opens into a black-and-white checkered marble entry foyer, which is flanked by a formal dining room and a step-down living room with a wood-burning fireplace sporting an imported French marble surround dating to the 1800s.

At the rear of the house, a cozy fireside den lined with bookshelves and an adjacent family room open to a sprawling backyard featuring a patio ideal for alfresco entertaining and a grassy lawn tumbling down to a sundeck-encased pool flanked by an open-air cabana. Back inside, a casual dining area connects to a sleek kitchen outfitted with Jerusalem limestone floors, Brazilian granite countertops, a breakfast bar, and a walk-in pantry.

Four secluded bedrooms include a spacious primary suite flaunting a cedar-lined closet and a marble bath with heated floors, dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a steam shower. The basement level, meanwhile, has a climatized 1,700-bottle wine cellar, storage space, and a fifth bedroom with its own entrance that could easily double as an office or exercise room.
