Czinger’s 21C Hypercar Set a New Production Car Record at Laguna Seca

Czinger has been making noise with its 21C hypercar for years now, unveiling new versions at Monterey seemingly every year and setting a record at Goodwood. Now, the Czinger has set a lap record closer to home, at Laguna Seca.

The Czinger 21C did a lap at the famed track in Monterey County, California, last week in 1:22.30, which set a production car record, and beat the previous record-holder—a Koenigsegg Jesko—by nearly two seconds.

“We knew that under ideal conditions the 21C was capable of earning a much faster lap than we had
demonstrated in the past—this lap time now properly reflects its capability,” Lukas Czinger, the marque’s founder and CEO, said in a statement. “We’ve built a tremendous road car that leads the pack on the track as well.”

The Czinger 21C that set the new record is powered by twin-turbo V-8 engine mated to electric motors to make 1,250 horsepower in total. The car was driven around the 2.238-mile track by Joel Miller, who drove the same 21C for 1,000 miles recently in a tour of race tracks across California. The Czinger set lap records at each of those tracks, which included Thunderhill Raceway Park, Sonoma Raceway, Willow Springs Raceway, and the Thermal Club.

The 21C also set a production car lap record at Laguna Seca during that drive, but that time—1:24.39—was later bested by the Koenigsegg, which zoomed around Laguna Seca in 1:24.16 just last month. Czinger posted its new record time on December 9. The car was aided by optimal conditions including a warm track and sunshine, Lukas Czinger told Road & Track. A previous attempt over the summer was also marred by a crash.

That back and forth between Koenigsegg and Czinger will likely continue, though a nearly two-second gap will be hard to surmount in the short term. The record is nearer and dearer to Czinger, however, because the hypercar company is based in Los Angeles, and is also a newer kid on the hypercar block, having been founded in 2019, while Koenigsegg has been at it since 1994.
