Bugatti set the production car top speed record in 2010 with a 267 mph run in a Veyron Super Sport, besting an effort five years earlier that saw a Veyron go 253 mph. Indeed, top speed has been Bugatti‘s calling card, celebrated now with a new restored Veyron Super Sport that helped the marque go over 431 kph.
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition is part exposed carbon fiber, part painted burnt orange, and a model that spent months in Molsheim getting completely refurbished. The car started life as a pre-series development Veyron before 70,800 kilometers were clocked on its odometer, or around 44,000 miles. The Veyron participated in marketing events, photo shoots, and customer demonstrations, traveling the world to spread the gospel of Bugatti.
In that time, Bugatti engineers were also using it to make a better Bugatti and, eventually, smash the world record top speed. That accomplished, Bugatti recently spent half a year restoring the car to its former glory. The Veyron Super Sport is powered by a W-16 engine making 1,200 horsepower.

The inside got a total refresh.

“Inside the cabin, the leather surfaces were carefully corrected and rejuvenated, while the seats were restored to their original form and comfort,” Bugatti said in a press release. “As the central tactile point between driver and machine, the steering wheel was also fully serviced and detailed, ensuring the authentic driving experience of the Veyron Super Sport could be enjoyed exactly as intended. Every stitch and finish—each was examined and refined to offer a new life to this extraordinary car.”
Outside, the carbon fiber was refinished, and new clear coat was applied. More interestingly, Bugatti says it actually updated some of the car’s innards, too, from pre-production parts to production parts, which would boost reliability and performance. The W-16 engine, though, remains the original unit to preserve the history.
Bugatti said that the car will now join the collection of an existing Bugatti owner, though the hypercar maker did not quote a price or identify the owner. The original price of the Veyron Super Sport was around $2.5 million, and today, they still can fetch that much at auction. One with this provenance and restoration handled by Bugatti itself would likely get a small premium, though, presumably, the new owner won’t be selling any time soon.
