While Bag End—the tunnel-like home from Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings franchise— may provide bucolic solace for Frodo Baggins, played by actor Elijah Wood, the hobbit-hole digs are hardly suitable for humans. Those drawn to that kind of fantasy retreat, however, might find a 1970s West Coast home—nestled into a granite boulder field and distinguished by a roofline with deep, scalloped eaves—an appealing alternative.

Known as the Stonehill Residence, and previously called the La Chapelle Residence, the curvilinear home sits on a one-acre parcel in Poway, in San Diego’s North County. Architect Robert Thiele, who stems from four generations of interior designers, partnered with artists James Hubbell and Rhoda Lopez under the banner Earth Form Builder, to complete the unique abode in 1979.

A stained-glass front door, designed by Hubbell, opens directly into a circular living room centered around a stuccoed kiva fireplace accented with red brick. A wall of curved windowed doors leads out to the tranquil rear grounds, and rich wood-paneled walls flow into the rustic kitchen, where a tiled backsplash highlights the cabinetry alongside an island, dual ovens, and a casual breakfast area.

Elsewhere, the formal dining room is framed by ample wall space for art, while adjoining sitting and lounge areas, brightened by large oval windows and skylights, create inviting spots for reading, writing, or taking calls. Exposed wood beam ceilings add warmth and character to one of the four sunlit bedrooms. The 2,232-square-foot home includes two bathrooms, each adorned with colorful mosaic tiling that stretches from the sinks to the showers.

Cuba-born artist Rhoda Lopez’s remarkable ceramic work is prominently featured throughout the residence, adding to its artistic provenance and mystical appeal; one room has a stunning piece that depicts a highly detailed dragon. The Stonehill Residence is now available for $2.5 million with Keith York of Agents of Architecture.

In their 10 years of working together, Thiele and Hubbell completed one other fantastical residence in California, known as the Davidson Residence in Alpine. Thiele also played a part in preserving the historic architecture and gardens of San Diego’s Balboa Park, as well as designing and installing the Thornton Rotunda Fountain at the San Diego Museum of Art.
