Another Hendrick’s is a New Gin Flavored With Cacao and Orange


Hendrick’s has been something of an outlier in the gin category since it was founded more than 25 years ago—a Scottish gin that was built around two specific botanicals, rose and cucumber, something that was pretty unusual at the time. The gin category has continued to expand over the years with new flavors and styles, and Hendrick’s has grown along with it, releasing new expressions and experiments that are still based on the brand’s core identity. The latest release, aptly called Another Hendrick’s, is the first permanent addition to the lineup in a decade—and we got an exclusive first look at this new gin flavored with cacao beans and orange blossom.

We spoke to Hendrick’s master distiller Lesley Gracie about the new expression, and she said that she was inspired by a trip she took to Mexico. “I went into a cocktail bar, and the bartender gave me this drink with this strange flower on the top,” she told Robb Report. “It was a cacao flower. Very hygienically, I took the flower out of the drink and played with it. But cacao has always been a really interesting flavor to me. The trees are so different, the flowers come out of the tree trunk and they only sit on the plant for a day and then they fall off if they’re not pollinated. It’s a really interesting plant.”

While Gracie admits to being a bit of a chocoholic, she said that the depth of flavor that cacao has can dominate the palate due to its intensity, so she decided to bring orange blossom into the mix. “If I put cacao into Hendrick’s on its own, it was too deep,” she said. “I was playing with other things in my Mediterranean greenhouse [at the distillery]. The blossom on orange is intense as well, but when I put those two together, it just lifted the cacao and it sat really nicely in the Hendrick’s flavor profile. It added an extra depth that is totally different than any other expression that I’ve done before.”

Another Hendrick’s, like all of the brand’s variants, starts out as original Hendrick’s, meaning that rose and cucumber are featured prominently among a total of 11 other botanicals that include coriander, elderflower, and, of course, juniper. The gin is distilled on two different types of stills—Bennett and Carter-Head—allowing Gracie to produce unique distillates made by either steeping or steaming the dried botanicals, with the essence of rose and cucumber added at the end. For Another Hendrick’s, she created an extract of cacao beans and used the essential oils from the orange blossoms, both of which were infused into the spirit. The result is a gin that is still very much identifiable as Hendrick’s (although the bottle is white instead of the traditional black glass the brand uses), but it has a prominent burst of subtle orange and chocolate flavors, making this a great cocktail option that is also worth tasting on its own.
