A sprawling Colorado property long owned by Emmy-winning comedy writer Tom Patchett has just hit the market. Nestled in Box Canyon on the picturesque Specie Mesa surrounded by rugged peaks and alpine meadows, about 45 minutes outside of Telluride, the 107-acre spread is asking a speck under $3.2 million, with Allison Templin of Telluride Properties holding the listing.
Custom-built during the late 1990s and early 2000s by Patchett—best known for co-creating the 1980s sitcom ALF with Paul Fusco, the puppeteer behind the furry, wise-cracking alien from the planet Melmac—the gated retreat within the Top of the World subdivision sits on two parcels of U.S. Forest Service-adjacent land and includes a main house, a guest cottage, a fishing cabin, and an art barn totaling roughly 2,700 square feet.

A bright red retro fireplace animates the main home’s vaulted living area.

A single bedroom and bath can be found inside the corrugated metal-clad primary dwelling, which also features a window-lined living area topped with an exposed beam cathedral ceiling and warmed by a bright red retro fireplace. The small kitchen is outfitted with stainless countertops and appliances, open shelving, a vintage range, and a portable butcher block-topped island.
Elsewhere is a guest cottage, which comes with a wood-paneled en-suite bedroom sporting a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, plus a rustic fishing cabin alongside a spring-fed pond. Making its own unique mark on the eclectic getaway is a soaring art barn with a loft accessible via a ladder and lots of whimsical antique memorabilia, from a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket chandelier to an Elvis Presley lamp. The decorative objects are not included as part of the sale but can be negotiated for purchase separately.

Patchett, whose career has also included stints as a writer and producer on the Carol Burnett and Bob Newhart shows, told Homes.com he and his wife, Carol, are selling because they are preparing to downsize to a condo they own in Telluride. “We haven’t spent as much time [there] as we used to because grandchildren have appeared on the Gulf Coast,” he said, “so we spend a lot of time flying over the property to get wherever they are.”
Added Carol, who particularly enjoyed the property’s elk, ducks, and flowers, “It’s not like any other place. So, it needs to go to someone who understands how cool and how intimate and how special the buildings are. And then, at the same time, loves the vast, open view.”
