Here’s one auction that lovers of modern-day American sports cars will want to keep tabs on.
A stunning 1998 Dodge Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition is currently up for auction over on Bring a Trailer. Not only is the car rare, but it’s also in immaculate condition, having totaled only 1,000 miles since leaving the factory nearly three decades ago.
There’s arguably no American-made vehicle that better symbolizes the 1990s than the Viper. Introduced in 1992, the serpentine two-door was noteworthy for being Dodge’s first pure sports car and also coming with a potent V-10. A first-generation refresh, dubbed the SRII, debuted in 1998, and was available in two versions: the RT/10 roadster and GTS coupe.

The hard-top Viper, which wasn’t available until the refresh launched, served as the basis for the race car that would win the 1997 FIA GT Championship GT2 division. To commemorate the feat, Dodge unveiled the GT2 Championship Edition, a special GTS that was the closest thing drivers could get to a street-legal version of the championship vehicle. It came with an upgraded powertrain, an appearance meant to raise awareness of the car’s on-track achievements, and was limited to just 100 units.
The example up for sale is the 48th that was built a year later. The Viper GTS was already a head-turning car, but the variant is clad in an even more exaggerated body kit that includes a vented hood, side skirts, and a giant rear wing. The exterior is finished in Stone White with blue racing stripes, features racing-inspired graphics, and rides on a set of 18-inch alloy wheels. The cabin, meanwhile, is home to two bucket seats upholstered in black leather with blue inserts and red Oreca racing harnesses, air conditioning, and an Alpine CD stereo system.

The GT2 Championship Edition is powered by a massive 8.0-liter V-10. The mill is factory rated for 460 horses, which is sent to the rear axle via a six-speed manual gearbox. That makes the variant slightly more powerful than the standard GTS, which made 450 hp brand new, which was itself more potent than the RT/10, which made “only” 415 hp. Amazingly, the listing says this example has just 1,000 miles on its odometer. It appears to also be in great shape, having recently passed its California smog test.
This Viper GTS GT2 Championship Edition will be up for bid through next Friday, April 17. As of press time, bidding has already topped $110,000, which is $25,000 more than the car cost brand new, but we expect that number to climb skyward in the days to come.
