Seasoned entertainment executive Ricky Strauss is probably best known for helping spearhead the launch of Disney+, as well as his tenure as president of marketing at the Walt Disney Company. But he’s also become somewhat of a design aficionado through the years, acquiring and putting his personal spin on several Los Angeles properties—Tudor and Mediterranean Revival houses in Hancock Park, a Hollywood Regency in the Hollywood Hills, a classic post-and-beam dwelling above the Sunset Strip, plus a modernist gem in Brentwood‘s woodsy Mandeville Canyon neighborhood that has just popped up for sale.

Originally designed in 1951 for a pianist by architect Kenneth Lind, with later tweaks by architects Pierre Koenig and Josef Van der Kar, the Veneklasen House, as it’s known, underwent an extensive restoration and expansion by L.A.-based firm Chu-Gooding shortly before Strauss picked it up in 2021 for nearly $10 million. Now the place has returned to market with Blair Chang of The Agency for nearly $9.3 million, after first listing last year for $10.5 million.

The meticulous makeover, carried out between 2019 and 2021, earned Veneklasen House a historic preservation award from the AIA’s L.A. chapter in 2022. “The renovation was intelligently and beautifully executed,” Strauss told Architectural Digest in 2022. “My contributions were largely cosmetic enhancements—wall coverings, window treatments, and so on. I decorated the house in a manner consistent with its modernist heritage, but I tried to find pieces that spoke to the period from a more global perspective.”

Set beyond a private drive and a gated courtyard entry amid a hillside parcel spanning almost three-quarters of an acre, the two-story structure offers three bedrooms and four bathrooms in roughly 3,900 square feet. The V-shaped interiors showcase a mix of terrazzo and hardwood floors, whitewashed wood-beam ceilings, expansive walls of glass, and exquisite furnishings by the likes of Sergio Rodrigues, Osvaldo Borsani, and Jens Risom.

The sun-drenched living room is a standout, with a staggered white-brick fireplace, a Noguchi pendant, and accordion-style doors that spill out to a deck. Other highlights include a family/media room, a bar-equipped dining room, and a kitchen outfitted with dark walnut cabinetry, gray-green quartzite countertops, a center island, and a breakfast bar with vintage stools.

Two guest bedrooms can be found on the lower level, while a treehouse-like primary retreat upstairs offers a fireside sitting area, a dressing room, and a bath with dual vanities, a built-in soaking tub, and a walk-in shower. A balcony overlooks the Mark Tessier-landscaped grounds, which are adorned with native plantings and a striking eucalyptus tree, along with a waterfall-fed pool and lounging and entertaining areas. There’s also an attached two-car garage.
