If desert modernism is your vibe, a new SoCal listing may call to you.
The 4,155-square-foot abode is located in Rancho Mirage, a low-density city in Riverside County, not too far from Palm Springs. The contemporary build, which dates back to just 2021, was designed by Sean Lockyer and Studio AR&D to be in conversation with the desert flora just outside. Notably, the walls of the single-story spread flow directly from the interior to the exterior, creating one long line that blurs the division between the two.

Glass walls frame the primary bedroom, which spills open to the central yard.

Available furnished or not, the home is centered around a spacious great room with an open kitchen, dining room, and living room. Glass walls line the space, where a sleek fireplace heats up the living area, and light-wood cabinetry contrasts with dark-gray countertops and veined backsplashes in the kitchen. For more casual family hangs, the tucked-away media room sports a plush red-velvet couch primed for movie watching.
Across the pad, there are four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in total. Glass walls also surround the tranquil primary suite, which includes a chic bathroom with a black-marble soaking tub and a pearly tiled shower. Some of the other bedrooms open to the outdoors, as well, and one of the extra bathrooms is lined in brick-red herringbone tile. For quick rinses, an outdoor shower sits among the landscaped yard, and there’s a detached casita where guests can have a bit of extra privacy.

A heated pool is the centerpiece of the yard, which also includes a massive outdoor kitchen.

Adding to the blurred boundary between inside and out, the central yard functions as a secondary gathering space. There’s a large, architect-designed outdoor kitchen with plenty of island space for serving food and drinks during parties. Multiple lounge areas provide guests with several options for chilling out. And the pool, surrounded by native plantings, is heated for comfortable swims year-round. Jeff Kohl at the Agency holds the $4.8 million listing.
While not one of California’s major real-estate markets, Rancho Mirage is home to some pretty remarkable properties. A few years ago, another Studio AR&D project hit the market for $4 million: a 1940s bungalow that was renovated and doubled in size to create a more spacious abode. And early last year, a colorful $4.3 million residence inspired by the Mexican architects Luis Barragán and Ricardo Legorreta hit the market in the neighborhood.
