Charles Du Bois, the late midcentury architect most remembered for infusing ranch-style homes with Asian and Polynesian influences, left his mark across Southern California. He was a well-known figure in Palm Springs’s desert modernism movement and in Los Angeles, where he designed more than 1,000 modern ranch homes in the suburban San Fernando Valley community of Woodland Hills, creating a sprawling subdivision known as Woodland West, now a recognized historic district.
One standout example in the neighborhood is a colorful four-bedroom residence on a prime quarter-acre corner parcel. The relatively unassuming exterior’s mint-green front door hints at the revamped residence’s color-drenched interiors. The current owners have thoughtfully utilized rich colors that complement original architectural details like the vaulted ceilings and Du Bois’s signature open floor plan.

The centerpiece of the home is a salmon-colored, double-sided masonry fireplace that rises smack in the middle of the living room, creating two separate lounges that both flow easily to the backyard. Wide banks of glass sliders open to a covered patio alongside a brick-lined swimming pool.
A small dining area is tucked to the side of the great room, next to the entrance to the kitchen. Here, modern appliances are paired with mod pistachio-green cabinetry and a tiled backsplash. There’s also an eat-in breakfast nook for casual meals.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are a veritable kaleidoscope of colors. The primary bedroom is done up in a punchy mauve, while the others come in muted chartreuse, soft eggshell blue, and sunny yellow. The brick-red primary bath features a pink-and-red striped shower, while another bathroom has a similar striped tile pattern in blue and yellow.
The SoCal abode is on the market for $1.7 million with Shelton Wilder and Emily Neri at Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California.
