Ron Burkle, the billionaire founder and chairman of the investment firm The Yucaipa Companies and a consummate collector of trophy homes, is asking just under $20 million for his digs in the guard-gated Malibu Colony enclave. He acquired the oceanfront residence in early 2022 for $13.5 million from the estate of the late artist and philanthropist Carol Moss, affectionately known as “The Mayor of Malibu.” Branden Williams and Rayni Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates hold the listing.
Built in the late 1920s and recently restored by preservation specialist Tim Gleason, the white and blue-trimmed Tudor A-frame structure offers five bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and a powder room in roughly 2,500 square feet. There are also separate staff/guest accommodations with a kitchenette, plus an attached two-car garage in the front and easy access to almost 40 feet of beach out back.

A gated flagstone walkway lined with bougainvillea leads into the ground floor of the two-story home, which is spotlighted by a soaring living room sporting the original oversized clinker brick fireplace and a wall of windows overlooking the Pacific. An adjacent kitchen has sage green shaker-style cabinetry, dual islands, a mounted wine rack, and Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, while French doors open to a terracotta-tiled sunroom-turned-dining area with sliding glass doors spilling out to a wood deck ideal for alfresco entertaining. Upstairs, a primary bedroom clad in grasscloth wallpaper hosts an updated sky-lit bath equipped with a glass-encased shower.

Though compact at well under a quarter of an acre, the backyard does include the aforementioned deck space, along with another raised deck that has stairs offering direct access to Malibu Beach. Rounding it all off: an $800 per-month HOA fee.
Burkle, whose estimated net worth is around $3.4 billion, per Forbes, clearly has a love for distinct and historic properties. The SoCal native, whose primary residence is a 22,000-square-foot “castle” built by real estate mogul Don Abbey on a private island in the middle of Montana’s Flathead Lake, currently owns Bob Hope’s former John Lautner-designed home in Palm Springs and the El Arco estate in Pasadena crafted by architect Sumner Hunt. He also lays claim to a legendary Beverly Hills estate known as Greenacres as well as a beachfront mansion in the La Jolla Farms neighborhood of San Diego that’s probably best known as a hideout for Michael Jackson during one of his legal scandals.
