You don’t have to go all the way to Africa for a taste of the safari lifestyle. In fact, you don’t even have to leave the continental United States.
This Northern California spread, dubbed Oak Hill Preserve, comes with a professionally managed collection of African Watusi cattle, East African plains zebras, and 75-year-old sulcata tortoises. It was conceived almost two decades ago by the owners, Brian and Bernadette Kraft, who have a deep love of African culture and wildlife. Indeed, the couple became engaged in a hot air balloon soaring above the Serengeti, and they later married in Africa. Inspired by their connections to the continent, they created the preserve as their own sanctuary in Ione, a small, historic Gold Rush town of less than 6,000 people just outside Sacramento.

The main residence’s great room includes a game area for playing pool and chess.

Situated behind gates, the 137-acre compound comprises a five-bedroom, three-bath main residence, several detached guest accommodations, and all sorts of outdoor amenities—lounges for soaking in the scenery, a putting green, a shuffleboard court, and a helipad, among them.

Known as the Lodge, the main house took five years to build and incorporates reclaimed redwood and stone mined on-site. About 6,500 square feet sprawl across a single level with no steps, making it accessible for those looking to age in place. Open-beach cathedral ceilings rise to 30 feet above the great room, a rustic-modern space where you’ll find a fireplace-warmed living room, a chef’s kitchen, and a game area with a billiards table.

Among the terraced grounds, you’ll find a putting green and a shuffleboard court.

In a separate wing of the house, each bedroom has access to the outdoors, reinforcing the home’s connection to its surroundings. The tranquil primary suite stands out with a double-height bathroom with an open shower and a soaking tub sitting beneath a picture window. Accommodations for guests are equally generous, with space for up to a dozen across a six-person bunkhouse, a guesthouse for two, and a vintage Silver Streak mobile home that sleeps four.
Life at Oak Hill Preserve is centered on the outdoors, with countless ways to experience the rolling landscape. Sports lovers can practice their swing on the driving range, shoot hoops on the half-court, or take aim at the archery range, while quieter moments unfold beside a spring-fed waterfall that flows into Sutter Creek. There’s even a cold-water jacuzzi and lounge space alongside another creek, and, located within a no-overflight zone, the preserve also offers exceptionally dark skies—perfect for stargazing.
The $5.1 million listing, which is being offered fully furnished, is held by Tim Allen at Coldwell Banker and Cheryl Nightingale at House Real Estate.
